The lengths I go to to ensure my recycling is effective.

i recall reading a comic book, possibly Richie Rich, a small ad in the back pages, where someone threw a toothpick in the NYC harbour. The gist of the message was “If everyone threw their toothpicks in the habour, it would fill up in short time”.
So, while I don’t believe any plastic I’ve ever used has ended up in the world’s oceans, I still do the following to ensure even the smallest items end up in the correct stream.
I believe it gives me the right to occasionally make less-than-perfect recycling decisions.

in reverse cron order.

— 2024-10-14 – Monday – cardboard pie box (blueberry!) with plastic file window. just break it open, pull plastic film off carboard, recycle as appro

2024-07-24 – raw sugar container; similar to Pringles can; inner lining is mylar, not metal foil.

2024-06-28 – removing the battery from a 510 vape battery; metal tube goes to the interesting parts bin, battery goes to the local recycling dropoff. not enough starogae to be interesting or usfulm, and partially damamaged.

2024-06-28 – last of the plastic bendy straws being reused. the dish drying rack with the green “grass” works perfectly.

2024-06-05 – pringles can; metal bottom, carboard tube.

2024-04-02 – aluminum screw top to an olive oil bottle; separate with hemostats, then into appropriate bins.
