Stuff we need to buy or have to re-assemble roof:

  • 2 pcs 1″ x 10″ x 8′ long board (likely pine, contruction grade
  • 1 1×6″? board for facia behind replacement
  • flashing? minimum 67″ of flashing to replace the drip lip
  • rubber sheet?
  • starter row strip?
  • shiungles (back of garage, under bench, next to back door
  • nails?
  • nails for shingles?
  • rubber boot for sink stink pipe? no need
  • May need a small amount of tar for roof
  • tar paper?

The following needs doing:

  1. remove the vinyl siding, sheeting, insulation from the outside kitchen wall
    • best to do in spring/summer
    • remove complete wall, not just where we think the problem is
    • this can be done first, before removing the deck roof.
    • should/might be able to see what is the exact problem
    • if we are lucky, might be able to determine fix without removing roof deck
  2. Remove the roof over the back deck. Destroy as required, ’cause it ain’t going back up.
    • umbrellas a(s) temporary shade for back deck
  3. Remove roof shingles, sheeting as wide as required and up a a few rows of shingles;
    • water damage might be a guide
    • need to see interface between the various beams running along the edge of the roof
    • should be able to see water damage
    • should be able to replace or otherwise fix.
      • depending on what requires doing, might need engineering, professional support.
  4. replace roofing sheeting, shingles.
    • (we have a slab of spares from last shingling?.
    • add significant barrier at roof edge; sheet metal? sturdy rubber?
    • what’s best we can do to prevent? this can’t be difficult.
  5. replace wall sheeting and vinyl
    • or maybe something fancier? brick? slabs or rock? maybe should make a posting about these options?
  6. replace roof deck.
    • maybe something fancier?
    • did someone say glass enclosed with electronically dimmable roof glass?

2023-03-02 – summary of my my thouhgts.

  • my opinion is the installer of the deck roofing did something substandard or missed a properm membrane when the deck roof was installed (perhaps even the original builder??? doubtful, but wtfdik?); i don’t really care hwo, i just want to fix.
  • there is more I have written in this; find and drop in here; plus all the stuff from chats; might be easist to screen snip them? but what about search? can’t search text that’s in graphics screen snmips are graphics, not real text? and here we go again with the frackng text/graphic dichotomy. ??????
  • There are reasons:
  • The kitchen wall has leaked since we arrived. I used to dismiss it as just water from near the sink, from a glass or bowl, etc. But I am now convinced the roof leaked since our day one. Therefore, the following are true:
  • the kitchen wall is water soaked and rotting
  • the kitchen ceiling, some if not all of it, is water soaked and rotting
  • the wall or ceiling has had at least one family of mice
  • the deck over the rear deck roof leaks
  • Even if a solution can be found to stop the leak, the wall and ceiling are still water-soaked, is rotting, and mice may find a home.

2023-03-20 – contraindication re: ice damn

Since the leak has occurred in summertime, if cannot be due only to an ice damn, since no ice in the summertime.

2023-04-20 – pictures after vinyl siding, sheeting, and insulation removed. next step is to remove the window, intact. since it appera there is water running across window top edge to left side. then remove the aluminima facia to expose wood upper supper beam ()lookup name).

2023-08-10 – during a moderate rain shower, checked deck roof for leaks. sadly, leaking noted in seams on the newly exposed edge. not from the exposure? but likely from the deck-to-house interface? might be hard to prove this. but if so, must remove and attempt to find & fix any further roof leaks.
