Without question, Trump ‘won’ his war against Iran. In doing so, he lost the world.

fed some of my thought from the good old s.o.c. file. I had the thought in the title, said it out loud a few times. ran it thru gemini to tighten it up. as usual, it offered to generate a few paras, which I then did some light editing:

The military outcome was never truly in doubt, but referring to this as a “victory” ignores the catastrophic collateral damage to American diplomacy. The United States secured its tactical objectives in Iran, but the cost was its position on the global stage. We are left asking how a nation recovers its standing after a president openly and unrepentantly threatens genocide to achieve his goals.

The immediate reality is that the reputation and credibility of the USA have been fundamentally fractured. When this administration is finally gone, it will take years, maybe decades, to repair the damage inflicted by one man. The guardrails failed. Emboldened by a Supreme Court ruling that effectively immunized official presidential actions, he operated without fear of consequences, treating international laws and norms as suggestions instead of boundaries.

To call this a calculated madman strategy gives him too much credit. This was not a masterclass in aggressive statecraft; it was leadership by clownshow. The world watched a commander-in-chief who often seems unaware of what happened just four days ago dictate the fate of a region and the destruction of a nation.

The war may be won, Iran is defeated, but the isolation of the United States has just begun.
