as part of the “how to live in a C-Class RV“, i am treating ther bar area as thew kitchen space avail in such a vehicle. one of the apliances is a single burner ~1500W induction hob. which i have issues with.
mine needs pans ~10″?? dia.

turns out there is an induction hob that can precisely control temperature, satisfying one of my wants. The Breville PolyScience “The Control Freak” apparently does the job to “hold any cooking temperature from 77°F / 25ºC – 482°F / 250ºC.”
Challenge: US$1500, so C$2000~

below here are raw from my s.o.c. file.
i want a induction hob/cooktoip that can handle a 6″ pan. and can set the temperature based on the current temperature (when i get the simmer just right, i want to press the temperature button and have the current temperature be the setpoint. in 1 degree increments
should write up my desire for induction hob to maintain heat at the point when I turn on temp mode. mine defaults to 320F, which is annoying since i most often what it to maintain that heat for exactly XX minutes. also in F, not switchable (that i know); brand? model?
put on blog; maybe in boingboing https://bbs.boingboing.net/t/happy-mutants-food-and-drink-topic-part-2/220362/3868?u=csilvest
I bought one for my downstairs bar, mostly to make omelltes, make KD, and warm/toast breadish things (tortillas, pitas, lavash…). A cheap one, brand model??? Mostly happy with it, except for these ??? gripes:
- Not at all even cooking. I was hoping, without actually looking it up, that induction habs would be much evener in the distribution of heat. Nope. Mines got a disticnk narrow ring of heat, perhaps 1/3rd the arae of the circle 10″. Is this common on all these devies, or is the sign i should up my game?
- Controls have some weith adjustment gaps; starts at power 5.0 (of 0.5 to 10.0 range); that’s pretty good, heats to a good starting point for these things in ~1min. + / – buttons go upwards in 0.5 incrementrs but downwards in 1.0 increments???
And the temperature mode setting is +10 / -20, which is awkward since when simmering things I will futz with the setting until thew simmer is just right, then set a timer for 10 mins or whatevs i think i need to get the stuff to the desires doneness
- in degrees F, not C. can’t find a way to set C. not angry at the F, just needs to accomdate both. or all, fur nurd finsiues (k, r, atc)
- the temperatuiree mode will maintain a setpoint temp, but it defaults to 320F; since I think it uses a sensor to detect and control the heat (at least at the surface between the hob and pan bottom), and this temp control is probably +/-5% ??? it would be SOHANNFY to have the thing display the ciurrent temp and unless i adjust it, and let me set a timer, and boom! done!. like with the too-coarse adjustment above, i get something to the right temp (simmering at ideal), this would be wicked good.
Protips
- always set a timer! for safety, i always set a timer for a few minutes longer than i expect i do this with an air fryer, too. was going to insallt a timer mechanical for the high-power devices on the bar, so no matter what these can’t be on long enough to become a hazardd. even if i’m just heading to the side table for an ingrediant, no telling how i might get distraqcted or have somehting provenet me from getting back as inteneded. this is likely a feature (or should be) in any it would also cut out vampire losses, since more these dives are drawing some power (should measure!!)
while both the hob and the air fryer have timers, they a) require setting, b) are not fail safe like fire prevent should be, c)
also handly wouyld be a programmable indiuction hob, wher i can set power/temp/time settings for at leat 3 steps. espcially cool if you could have ot in on 10 for boil, then automatically drop to 195 or so to main tain boils or simmer for ?? time, with options to alert at each step. again, no devic e is likely to have this, but with minimal sensorer externally done, could be made to work.
a microqwave/air fryer combo would work as a 2nd appliace in kitchen, just so fast for small jobs, but som euch better than microwave for things that need crisping; and a small seup without main full size oven/stove combe, an add an instant pot and a one burner induction cooktop (or butane probane cooktop
the battery include in an induction stove could reduce or remove the need to re-wire homes that don’t have 50A avail in the kitchen; this might be the case where gas sovoeds are more commne.
“Induction stoves tend to be expensive, but his company is offering a battery that could reduce costs by circumventing the need for home electrical rewiring. They’re hoping to start by selling to coastal city residents who want to switch to a newer technology — “similar to who buys Teslas or what have you,” he said.”
also, might be a way to give a super burtner
what about a cooktop with 3 large induction and one large ng, real powerrful, wok friendly.
better: 2 inductions + 1 long cast iron griddle + 1 wok-sixed ng.
i can’t understand how one can do significant stirring type cooking (wok, the shaking and tilting one can do on gas is very important to some cooks; but can this just be a learn the no shaky shaky
also, the ideas of a locsal battery in the electic induciton stove is brilliant. could salove the surge issue like the water heater problem solvbed by everyone havuing storage capacity. mayb this is suppoorted by the idea that you can’t have everyone go tankless at the same lines, with no storage lovally,m too much power either electic or ng infrastructure is no capable of deliveringh
waffle irons are making a spash! mioght be a good camper, if just done with a induction hob or gas ho0b, heavy cast irne waffle cooker plates,
all products with beepers must have a volume control. microwave, induction hob, too loud.
