Ghost particle that crashed into Antarctica traced back to star shredded by black hole

A black hole gobbled up a star in deep space and flung a high-energy subatomic bullet at the Earth. Don’t worry, the planet’s doing fine.

Although probably beyond my grasp, the papers mentioned in the article are likely interesting… just skip the hard parts! 🙂

Also, this explains the detector.  Fascinating!  Wonder if same as the one in Sudbury?  Not so much in specific construction, but capability?  Could SNO have detected this?

Also: “The observatory is set to get an upgrade during the 2022 and 2023 Antarctica seasons, pandemic notwithstanding, which should increase the number of neutrino detections by a factor of 10.”

Will this make the detector more sensitive (find more neutrinos?), more accurate-in-locating-origin, or both?
