So what’s the answer? Seth describes “unfettered” capitalism (growth and profits at all costs). Seems to me the role of government is to guide, ensure, and enforce fairly rules that ensure all capitalism is directed towards the greater good. What’s that called? Is it possible? Is there anyone doing it this way?
For instance, can we harness the power of the capitalist “marketplace” to drive down the costs of, let’s say, medicine. Capitalism drove the cost of Lasik surgery to $500/eye (??). The joke is this sort of discount surgery is less safe. But roll of government should ensure best practices, safety, and such are followed.
But will this not lead to a two-tier system, one for the rich and one (assumed to be less good) for the rest of us?
Also ties into my idea that “a market will always develop” if we let it. And capitalism will ensure the most efficient use of every resource.
