Joey Chestnut And The Science Behind Competitive Eating | Sport Science | ESPN – YouTube

“Sports” – un-huh.  I’m an athlete ’cause I can do this thing…

“Science” – sure.

“Eating” – no, that’s not eating.  Love the bit where the forcing of food down the esophagus is like “squeezing a tube of toothpaste”.

This seems to be a very ‘Murican thing.  Paraphrased from Wikipedia, “popular mostly in USA, Canada, and Japan”.  Can’t say I’ve ever heard of such a contest in Canada, at least on the scale of US ones.  Not saying it never happens.

How does this intersect with the “mukbang” thing, which seems to have originated in East Asia (South Korea?).

Also, no competitive eaters are eating “hot dogs”.  They are eating wieners and a slurry of bun water.  Which adds to the gross factor.
