Native Hawaiian honeycreeper birds are being wiped out by avian malaria. Scientists think they can battle the problem by releasing more mosquitoes.

He warns, however, that while in Hawaii they felt confident using the technique because mosquitoes are an invasive species that have only been around for 200 years and therefore play no major ecological role, in other countries where they are native, the technique could have unintended repercussions to the ecosystem.
further evidence we need to eliminate mosquitos (and black flies!) for good. yes, there’s repercussions. but things will eventually settle down to a new balance. Maybe there will be less of these (or other) birds or fish or spiders, but I’m ok with that. no one animal or spider or fish was hurt, just less reproduction and a decline in population. and if they go exticnt, maybe they just don’t fit anymore. too bad, so sad.
