Media theory pioneer Harold Innis saw it 70 years ago: Some cultures and ideas are built to spread across SPACE. And some spread across TIME. It’s the tension between space and time that lead…

“Innis would argue that many of the dislocations and painful collisions of modern culture are being caused by the abrupt shift to space-focused ideas. We’re starting on a second generation of people, worldwide, who are day trading their emotions and confronting ideas that have no past and little future.”

“We’ve been indoctrinated from a young age to avoid agency, even in our media consumption. To wait and accept the next idea when it arrives. To not change the channel, to go to the big movie of the moment, to listen to the top 40, to parrot the talking points of the boss.
And now, perhaps for just a brief moment, there’s a chance to take back agency and go within.“
I think the way i’m u7sing youtube is “taking back the agency”. yes, the yt algortitm is feeding me stuff, but for the most part, it is what i wanbt: news, weather (ryan hall’yall is better than any other source of wethaer in of on the northamerica ); lookner agenda-free is for anything breaking worldwide;, etc.) and then I get to choose the exact ypye of comedy I want (dry bar, the relevant portions of the late night comedy guyz, etcx. it is very rare to see astupid shit like mr beast orall the crap one sees on tiktok, although yt is trying hard with the shorts.
‘course, this is just me thinking i am somehow out of the influenves
likewise, how I read reddit (top level comments only, i go to specific subreddits (or in fark.com, only funny and politics tsbs, and only 50 comments. these sites are agreggators of info I want to read, instead of me having to find stufdf, they find the good stuff, the users up./down votes, and i only see the best; in any particular subreaddit there is algor but it is just (i think) upvoted to the top, so i read only the top threads, usually no more that 2 levels deep since below that it’s usually not worth the effort. whereas if one reads the reddit front page, all sorts of algor shit can be happening.
also, how the f does anyone browse the public internet without adblockers and dns hbloack holes? trytring to read articles on nearly any site from my tablet (no ad blocker, adblocker on hass is disabled (will enabale
bout of course i think its ideal, but it’s my own self-created bubble.
