appear we have a slow leak in the evaporator coil of the ac system. given it’s ~20 years old, likely not a good idea to replace evaporator (assuming that’s where leak is? how to determine?), since outside unit will likely die soon after. also, want to go with a heat pump (ccASHP = Cold Climate Air-Source Heat Pump) like all the cool kids are doing.
so: replace ac unit with ccASHP, whgich will make for a”hybride” system, leaving the ng furnace in place (might upgrade motor to DC for reasons??); smart thermostat (they will give an Ecobee, by Mike Boyle sez they can use my AprilAir 8920w??) that i got for auction$$), assuming it works; if not, use the cobee (but confirm it works with either./boith Alaexa and Homeassistant.,) smart thermostat with use the ng furnace when it’s cold enough (likely what the -30C maeans? which is pretty rare in ptbo. (neeed to get historical data like I used to.,…)
THE THOUGHT I KEEP HAVINING AND FORGETTING: should the outside thingy for the heat pump be shaded in the summer? or ideally whenevs it’s demqaning cold?
pro: greener, more efficient??
con: cost? rebates = 0$ right now; hopefully more soon? Boyle quote #10197, ~8K$
at the moment, early august, no one is complaining, so it’s working good enoigh. maybe plan for before next tummer?
