“depopulated” is NPR-speak for “killed”?

“The company says it “depopulated” about 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets, or about 3.6% of its flock, as a result of the outbreak.”

an interesting Fark comment:

If hens lay an egg every 26 hours, is the light cycle set to 26 hours? or maybe it doesn’t matter?

i wonder how many George the Chicken man had? I seem to recall 10k / floor, so 40k when I was a teen.
