The route home. Took us ~8 hours longer than expected due to very heavy traffic for the first ~12 hours. Slept in the car since everything was booked.
- The speaker’s overall opinion on solar eclipses: While a cool sight to see, the speaker doesn’t consider it life-changing and wouldn’t spend a significant amount of money to travel for another one.
- Their experience with the 2017 eclipse: They enjoyed a low-cost road trip to experience the 2017 eclipse. While nice, they wouldn’t repeat the expense.
- Hype vs. Reality: The speaker believes astronomical events are often overhyped in popular science writing. They find these events pale in comparison to modern entertainment options and can sometimes be a letdown, especially for those with less interest in astronomy.
- Examples: The speaker cites
commentscomets and potential novae (exploding stars) as examples where the actual event doesn’t often match the level of excitement generated beforehand.

My thoughts on going to the toll solar eclipse there are many people who talk about it as the best thing I’ve ever seen a religious experience life changing experience I don’t see it as that it was certainly a nice thing to see i’ve read about eclipses i’ve been an astronomy hobbyist without a telescope of course for many many years however I would not spend more than $200 let’s say for example to go see another one for the trip in 2017 joan and I basically did a fun quick road trip so two or three nights in a hotel maybe $500 total Bing Cincinnati area allowed us to get some since today chilly into us and I’m pretty sure we would have bought back at least a dozen hands if not more but ultimately I would not spend that amount of money again because it’s a nice event and a nice effect to experience but I don’t see spending the amount of money that some people do but call there are as many there are cruises there were air special air flights people could spend thousands of dollars to get on those to see what some consider a life changing event so if anybody asks me I would say if you can afford to drive down to Welland or out to Kingston and you have a good plan for getting stuck in the traffic jam then go for it but beyond that I just don’t as with many astronomy events in the talk around it can sometimes be rather extravagant compared to the actual event I mean just looking at things like comments for instance or the new there’s a starter that’s going I think Nova soon and we’re expected to see a new star in this guy and a new event in this guy but if you know when the talking about it as a exploding star and you know bunch of lifetime opportunity to see it it’s going to turn out to be a probably a 4th or 5th magnitude star that unless you’re absolutely familiar with the particular constellation it’s going to shop in you probably wouldn’t even you would never notice it it’s not that bright it’s not that big in effect and I think there’s a mismatch between what astronomy writing or popular writing science writing is on these events versus the actual real event tends to be a little bit of a let down for many people especially given the current availability of entertainment like try to convince a kid to get away from his PS5 to go out and look at a new star that’s going to show up and then it just doesn’t compare these events would rather spectacular back in the day when the sky was the only thing you could look at it right but the immediate or the available optionalities for entertainment make the stuff really kind of pale in comparison which is a bit sad but at the same time what it is so
