Starlink for home? Bev & Hugh? Camping? Class C RV?

Note: in reverse cron order…

2023-03-13~ – got email from Starlink with 50% off hardware (“Dishy” + router?), so C$350, then C$140/month. Sadly, we’re still in “Waitlist”; Bev & Hugh too. But the order form is ready to take our money and deliver something in 2023.

A review from Forbes. And a Canadian site. Easy to find Youtubes of people showing good results. I’ve read as much as 250Mb/sec, latency <50msec, so indeed fast. And unlimited, although I have heard of caps might be required on “abusers”.

Too expensive for us as a backup. But perhaps pickup the hardware at discount ready for use when wires or fiber fails us? Curious if these are the new (~2023-02? “Hi Perfoprmance”) dishes or the original “Standard” (the new one is ~1/2 the size)?

The “roaming” service is only slightly more, C$170/month [+C$30 over fixed dish], same hardware discount. This would be awesome (and necessary)1, for camping or in a Class C RV or even boat!! Maybe setup setup a Guest portal, or even a “Donation” access… just need a WiFi router with the necessary software (OpenWRT with one of the Guest portals?); if you kept the dish hidden you could do it on the sly, too!) But how do you charge without revealing your crimes?

Sadly, southern Ontario and the all-important-to-Snowbirds southeast USA is still on the waitlist. But then again, a “roaming” plan is supposed to work. Maybe this is by design…
