Canada declares plastics toxic, paving the way for restrictions

“I think the days of waiting for recycling to work are over,” said Karen Wirsig, program manager for Environmental Defence. The organization has been working closely with several others, including Oceana Canada, to push the government to enact stronger plastics rules. “We need to reduce the amount of plastic that gets put on the market and therefore, into the environment. We need to find alternatives to plastics in many cases.”

My three step plan:

  1. Deposit/return on all plastic containers, and more complex items (TV, applince) can also be included.  We know deposit/return, just look to The Beer Store.
  2. Fund deposite/return by producers of plastics; not sure if all the back to the virgin resin producers, the plastic item creation in the press, or the end-manufactour (the one that sells to the somcumer, like RCA or IBM
  3. ban the use of plastics that can’t be recycled.

Problem: the politician that proposes the above will be laughed out of parliment.
