The Ukrainian gas transit system constitutes a heritage of the Soviet energy expansion to Europe,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Excluding Russia\u2019s gas reserves in Asia, Ukraine today holds the second biggest known gas reserves in Europe. As of late 2019, known Ukrainian reserves amounted to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/content\/dam\/bp\/business-sites\/en\/global\/corporate\/pdfs\/energy-economics\/statistical-review\/bp-stats-review-2019-natural-gas.pdf?ref=hir.harvard.edu\">1.09 trillion cubic meters<\/a>\u00a0of natural gas, second only to Norway\u2019s known resources of 1.53 trillion cubic meters. Yet, these enormous reserves of energy remain largely untapped. Today, Ukraine has a low annual reserve usage rate of about 2 percent.
