But for many, life has returned to normal, or something similar to it. Five days later, the Canadian government closed its borders to help contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The next day, on March 17,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/2020\/06\/01\/premier-doug-ford-pushing-to-extend-ontarios-state-of-emergency-to-june-30.html\">Ontario declared a state of emergency<\/a>: schools closed, workplaces went virtual, Parliament shut down and life changed for the next few years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Teachers are taking advantage of the digital tools available now that schools are open again. Panagiotopoulos says examples include Google Classroom (where many teachers keep their work online so kids can access it), Scratch (a free programming tool for youth), and electronic readers that are \u201cculturally responsive,\u201d to name a few.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>While hybrid learning (where educators simultaneously teach in a classroom and online) is not offered, Panagiotopoulos says there is virtual schooling which is full time, synchronous learning \u2014 which would have been \u201cunthinkable five years ago.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>There has also been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2023\/01\/24\/high-school-exams-are-back-why-theyre-putting-more-than-just-students-nerves-to-the-test.html\">a shift away from formalized exams<\/a>.
